The Fahey/Klein Gallery is pleased to present Day to Night an exhibition of panoramic works painstakingly created by photographer, Stephen Wilkes.  For his renowned series Day to Night, Wilkes spends up to 30 hours perched at least 50 feet in the air, shooting over a thousand frames from the same vantage point, with the aim of preserving a location from morning to night in the same image. Wilkes’ time-defying series, whether set in Greenland, the Serengeti, or New York City, offer a view of interweaving experiences inclusive of all the ranges of atmospheric color, mixed interactions, and spontaneous charmed moments that life can present in a single day.

In 1996, Stephen Wilkes was commissioned by LIFE magazine to take a panoramic shot of the cast and crew of the film, Romeo + Juliet. Once on location, Wilkes realized the set was square, prompting him to improvise for his shot. Influenced by previously studying David Hockney’s photographic collages, Wilkes decided to create a panoramic shot through different angles and later physically pasting them together to form a single image. With this technique, he was able to capture the lead actors, engaged in a hug in one shot and kissing in the reflection of a nearby mirror in another. It’s here that Stephen Wilkes begins to bend time and maneuver the narrative in a way that would transform his methodology and shape a path towards his acclaimed series.

This collection takes the viewer on a seamless trip from dawn to dark across the world’s most iconic locations, unveiling the unique ebb and flow of man-made and natural landmarks like never before.  With a grant from the National Geographic Society, the series was extended to include America's National Parks in celebration of their centennial anniversary.

Stephen Wilkes' work is included the permanent collections of institutions including The George Eastman Museum, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Library of Congress, The Dow Jones Collection, The Museum of the City of New York, and many others.

Wilkes’ new hardcover monograph Stephen Wilkes, Day to Night (Taschen, 260 pages; $150) is available for purchase at the gallery while supplies last.
