DAVID DREBIN
Love & Other Stories

June 28 through September 1, 2007
Reception for the Artist Thursday, June 28, 7-9 p.m.

The Fahey/Klein Gallery is pleased to present a selection of color photographs from David Drebin's first photographic monograph, Love and Other Stories (DAAB Publishers, 2007). Showcasing the world of the young, beautiful and stylish, Drebin's new work constructs a photographic narrative that blurs the line between our reality and the imagination. "He is a master at creating the perfect balance of reality and artifice. He infuses his images with clues, but gives us no answers. So we wonder. Who are these people?" (Michelle Bogre, Love and Other Stories).

With a heightened attraction to nuance, David Drebin's images extend beyond the created veneer of a seemingly colorful and perfect life in the midst of a contemporary city. Upon looking closer, his urban scenes offer a perspective of both subtle subject interaction and understated humor. The viewer is a voyeur who feels he or she has suddenly walked in on a dramatic scenario in the vibrant cityscape-the viewer sees a simple story of love, without the beginning or the ending, or is privy to witnessing a private moment. Drebin says, "The most gripping photographs are either funny and sexy, sexy and sad, or sexy and funny--without being sad."

Drebin's work illustrates the visual logic of a staged encounter, mixing a playfulness that is not only attractive, but adds an element of drama through his subjects' expressive gestures and interactions. Compelling and visually engaging, Drebin's photographs present a vivid sense of wonderment in each of his narratives. "Coming from a perspective based on how I see the world with my eyes, heart, ears and brain; I like to think of myself not only as a photographer--but as a psychographer" (David Drebin).

David Drebin is from Toronto, Canada. He graduated from the Parsons School of Design in New York City in 1996. After achieving success with ad campaigns for clients such as American Express, Davidoff, and MTV, Drebin has established himself as a commercial and editorial photographer for magazines such as Vanity Fair, French Photo, GQ, Elle and Rolling Stone. His work is included in numerous private collections throughout Europe and the United States. David Drebin currently lives and works in New York City.
